Tramp 1362 - 3-6 APR, EASTER WEEKEND – Kaimanawa Forest, Te Iringa track – Kaipo river. Camping. (Costs $10 hut ticket + private car costs) Grade C

Grade C, camping trip

Day 1: drive down to Clements Mill roadend carpark (3hrs) and walk to Cascade hut (4hrs, 6 bunks).

Day 2: Up and over Kaipo saddle and down Upper Kaipo river track to campsite at junction with Te Iringa track (7hrs)

Day 3: Te Iringa track along Kaipo river to Oamaru hut, then Oamaru river track to campsite at Maungaorangi track junction (8hrs)

Day 4: Walk up to Maungaorangi (1436m) and down to Cascade hut (8hrs).

Day 5: Explore nearby Tauranga-Taupo river gorge. Walk out to Clements Mill roadend carpark (4hrs) and drive back home.

Notes:

• Private car(s)
• Tent or similar overnight camping gear is required
• The Upper Kaipo river track has multiple river crossings, sections in the river and climbing over logs/rocks; the climb up to Maungaorangi is a route that may require a bit of navigation
• The tramp can be done in reverse depending on preference of group members
• Trip can be done outside of Easter weekend depending on weekday availability of group members and weather forecast
• Around Easter there is increased presence of hunters due to the roar season; high viz shirt and/or backpack cover is recommended.
• Cascade hut is a standard hut requiring $10 hut adult ticket or backcountry hut pass.
