Trip 1348 SEP 27/28 SNOW TRIP OVERNIGHTER, Mt Taranaki – Maketawa Hut

This is an opportunity to have a tramp on Mt Taranaki in September with the hope of finding snow.

It is a Saturday/ Sunday trip with Saturday night spent in the 16 bunk space Maketawa Hut on the Maunga.

We will leave Hamilton at 7.30am on Saturday and drive to the Taranaki Northern Visitors Centre on the mountain. We will then tramp to the Maketawa Hut via the lower bush trail (1.5-2 hours). The hut is not bookable and requires visitors to pre purchase a $25 Serviced Hut Ticket or have an annual Backcountry Hut Pass. Tickets are available from Hamilton tramping shops- check availability by phoning.

On Sunday morning we will set off up the mountain in search of snow. If we are lucky it will be there, but if not, it will still be a great day on the mountain. At a pre-arranged time we will descend the mountain to our vehicles to return to Hamilton.

This trip will suit trampers who have good uphill tramp fitness and who are comfortable with overnighting in mountain huts. You will need to bring food for Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast and lunch plus any nibbles and drinks and clothing suitable for winter mountain conditions.
