Trip 1329 MAR 9, Firewood Creek, Train Wreck, Waikato Grade A
Trip 1329 MAR 9, Firewood Creek, Train Wreck, Waikato Grade A.
Leaders Michiel & Lorna
Bookings start Feb 9 to Mar 3
Leaving Hamilton on Sunday 9 March 9am. A short day.
Meet at Hakarimata Railway Track carpark on Waingaro Rd.
First 1.5km on track, after that we will try and follow a vague track following the route of the old Glen Massey coal railway line. We might end up walking through the adjacent Firewood Creek if this seems easier than bushbashing our way through.
This will be for about 2km, when we reach our exit point: a swimhole with steps up to the road. The remainder of a viaduct and pieces of the train wreck are supposedly not far from this point in the river. The train veered off track at this viaduct in 1933.
We will need at least one vehicle at each end.
It's all a bit of an unknown so come prepared for an exploration and getting wet, but it will be a fun experience.
Transport, $30 Members & $35 Non-members (if numbers are low we may arrange to car pool which will cost less)
