Return of the Laborious Labour Weekend !
We will try and leave as early as possible (3pm?) on Friday 25 October and put up camp somewhere close to the start at Makahu Saddle. Extra tents or fly for this may be required that can be left in the van to avoid having to pack a wet tent the next morning.
Other accommodation options are still being looked at, which may incur an additional overnight cost.
This, as well as the prefered routes will be decided on closer to the date, when there is a clearer view on the expected weather and group members.
At the moment the plan is as follows (names and times indicated are from hut to hut):
(Note: camping along the way or around hut is likely so bring a tent or bivvy bag)
Expected to be back home by 8pm on Monday 28 Oct.
Come prepared for all sorts of weather and have multiple layers as well as rain/wind jacket, gaiters, sun cap/hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, warm clothes and beanies, insect repellent.
No snow or ice is expected, but rain and wind can be an issue.
All the usual overnight gear (refer website) is required, as well as tents/fly as indicated.
The terrain in the Kawekas can be described as steep ups and downs to and from rivers and exposed tops, so carrying a big pack can be challenging and tiring during long days so pack wisely!
Together with beautiful bush and streams and in fine weather great views this makes for a fantastic weekend away from it all.
Cost: $75 for members, $80 for non-members.
Back-country hut pass or tickets are required to stay in the huts.
