Leaving Hamilton as usual 7.30am from Mill Lane and driving for 1.5hrs to the end of Appletree Rd in the Waitomo district.
This relatively easy loop track to the Tawarau falls in one of our favourite areas starts from the carpark at the road end and will take about 4hrs.
It follows the meandering Tawarau river through a pretty, mossy limestone gorge with some small waterfalls of side streams.
A bridge leads to the other side of the river, then a couple of river crossings follow before a descent with help of a chain to the base of the falls. Climbing back up and continue the track until it meets the Double Falls track.
Then back to the carpark and return to Hamilton expected to be around 3pm.
